She & Him, a cool band

So I get this magazine in the mail called Paste. It’s a cool alt rock magazine. You should read it. Anyways on the cover of the most recent issue stands Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. Zooey is that quirky offbeat actress from Elf, and M. is indie royalty. Zooey and M. have a band, a cd, which Paste called album of the year. This had me intrigued. With the history of actresses attempting pop stardom ( *cough* Scarlett Johansson *cough* and basically everyone else you can think of) I was also a bit skeptical.

Zooey and M. form the group She & Him and if you like ’60s inspired pop, give this album a try. I have to say I’m in love. The tracks are defintely retro and sugary, but all around fun. The cd, Volume One, is a pick-me-up and is sure to turn any frown upside down. Deschanel lends her writing skills on most of the tracks. I especially love the covers “You Really Got a Hold on Me” (A Smokey Robinson classic) and ” I Should Have Known Better” ( A Beatles tune). Start listening to them on their myspace page. A few of my favorite songs are : ” Why Do You Let Me Stay Here” (with an adorably quirky video), “Take it Back” (a jazzy sad love song), and “Sweet Darlin'” (sure to make you smile even on your gloomiest day). You can also get the album in MP3 format on Amazon for only 5 bucks. All you have to do is download their widget and the songs load directly into your itunes or windows media player. Skip one latte, buy the tracks!
